Mockingbird Staff

David Zahl Contact David Here.

David Zahl is the director of Mockingbird Ministries and editor-in-chief of the Mockingbird blog. Born in New York City and brought up elsewhere, David graduated from Georgetown University in 2001, and then worked for several years as a youth minister in New England. In 2007 he founded Mockingbird in NYC. Today David and his wife Cate reside in Charlottesville, VA with their three boys, where David also serves on the staff of Christ Episcopal Church. His first book, A Mess of Help: From the Crucified Soul of Rock N’ Roll, appeared in 2014. Most recently, David co-authored Law and Gospel: A Theology for Sinners (and Saints) with Will McDavid and Ethan Richardson. Even after all these years, he’s still mourning the end of Calvin and Hobbes (and hoping that Morrissey and Marr will bury the hatchet). His favorite theologian is probably a cross between Johnny Cash, Flannery O’Connor and his brother Simeon.

Ethan Richardson Contact Ethan Here.

Ethan Richardson is the founding editor of The Mockingbird magazine. Born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, he graduated from the University of Virginia in 2009, before spending two years in New Orleans with Teach For America. Shortly after coming on staff in 2011, Ethan authored This American Gospel, and in 2013, he oversaw the completion of The Mockingbird Devotional. Most recently, Ethan co-authored Law and Gospel: A Theology for Sinners (and Saints). He lives out in the country with his wife Hannah, and together they enjoy the (pretend) agrarian life. His interests include gritty British crime shows, country funk, and baseball documentaries.

Sarah Condon Contact Sarah Here.

Sarah Condon is an associate editor of the Mockingbird Blog, author of Churchy, and co-host of The Mockingcast. She is also an Episcopal priest at St. Martin’s Church in Houston, Texas. She went to Yale for Divinity School. And she only drinks organic milk. If you’re starting to feel crappy about your life reading this, please keep in mind that Sarah is deeply neurotic, originally from a state with the highest teen pregnancy rate (I see you, Mississippi), and is Mockingbird’s in-house expert for the Housewives Franchise. She is astonished that God loves and forgives even her. And she can’t stop writing about it.

CJ Green Contact CJ Here.

CJ Green is the managing editor of the Mockingbird blog and head of Mockingbird Publications. He studied English at the University of Virginia and now lives in Charlottesville. In 2017, CJ and his wife Maddy created Mockingbird’s first children’s book, The Very Persistent Pirate. His favorite writers are Lemony Snicket and Kate DiCamillo.

Bryan Jarrell Contact Bryan Here.

Bryan Jarrell is the voice behind Mockingbird’s chirps on Facebook and Twitter. He’s probably watching you tweet right now, like those guys scanning the Matrix code looking for Agent Smith. While Bryan scours the interwebs for new Mbird fans and post ideas, he also enjoys unplugging from the Matrix to cook delicious meals for his wife, Beth. Currently a full time employee of West Virginia University, Bryan is also a priest in the Anglican Church of North America, serving as a supply and interim priest for congregations in WV and Western PA. More favorites include Dostoyevsky, EDM and Indie-Pop, St. Augustine, most things by Dan Harmon, and Johnny Walker Red Label.
